Island Cross is a Butey!

For the first time ever an adult Cyclocross race took part on the Isle of Bute, as part of the Rothesay Cycling Weekend. Organised by Cyclocross stalwart Stuart Green, with assistance from Bute Wheelers and Sponsorship from Walkers Cycling, among others, the race was to prove an unequivocal success.

A field of over forty rain soaked riders were led up through the town on Saturday evening, into a football stadium grand depart, from then on it was full gas through some tasty twists and turns into woodland and a series of traditional run up and adverse camber descents to sap the legs and test the endurance of every rider, who braved the elements.

From the gun Stevie Jackson (Glasgow United) tore the field apart to blaze to a fine win over the Rockhard MBC racing duo of an on form Gordon Dickson and Ronnie Barker.

Further down the further down the field, top female came in the form of Mona Petrie (Deeside Thistle) who saw off the challenge of an ever improving Anna Walker (Walkers Cycling) and a fine ride from Elizabeth Adams (Glasgow Green CC) who lugged her Mountain bike round to take third in class.

This event is sure to grow in stature and plans are already emerging to make the race an even bigger and better spectacle next year, and it is expected to have a large increase in numbers.

With it's date keenly positioned just before the start of the Ridley Scottish Cyclocross Series which kicks of on the 6th of October at Auchentoshen, some of the riders have at least had some mud under their wheels before taking on the Glasgow United promotion.

The organizers would also like to thank Euan Clelland and the Grange Kitchen for laying on some well tasty hot and cold food before and after the event, in what was challenging weather to say the least.

The results are here.
