With less than 100 days until Christmas, Scottish cyclists are preparing for the annual Santa Cross World Championships and a spectacular weekend of cyclocross racing on the Isle of Mull.

On the 7th and 8th December, hundreds of cyclists will make the annual pilgrimage to Glengorm Castle near Tobermory, for a weekend of cyclocross racing hosted by Hors Catégorie Cycling Club.

While the Saturday is reserved for the seventh round of the Scottish Cyclocross Series, on the Sunday, young and old alike will don Santa suits and compete to become crowned the Santa Cross World Champion.

Races will take place for all youth categories (under 8-16) and for the first time, the adult open race (all male and female riders from Junior to Vets) incorporates a running Le Mans style start which will be sure to please the spectators who will be enthusiastically ringing their cow (and sleigh) bells.

Scottish rider, Charlie Aldridge, who is Junior MTB World Champion explains why grass-routes cyclocross events like these are so popular:

“Cyclocross isn’t only a great way to keep fit during the winter but also loads of fun. It’s really popular with both roadies and mountain bikers and everyone is friendly and welcoming so perfect for people who are new to the sport!”

“I love racing the cyclocross on Mull as it’s definitely the most scenic course on the cyclocross calendar – it’s a great weekend of cyclocross racing and a Christmas party rolled into one!”

Tom Nelson, owner of Glengorm Castle says:

“The cyclocross has been a great boost to the economy over the past number of years and it’s great to still be able to welcome this group of enthusiasts to the island.”
